Indian Muslim NGOs say don't limit eatery hours

Some Indian Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Penang have urged the government to review its proposal to limit the operating hours of eateries until midnight, as a measure to curb social ills.

Shahul Hameed Syed Mohamed, a representative of the NGOs who is also the vice-president of the Penang Muslim League, said the proposal was irrelevant and unfounded as 24-hour eateries were not a cause of social problems.

"We the Indian Muslim NGOs in the state oppose the plan because there are no studies or statistics which show 24-hour eateries lead to social problems.

"Moreover these 24-hour 'nasi kandar' restaurants do not sell liquor which is one of the main factors contributing to social problems these days," he told a press conference in George Town today.

He was commenting on news reports quoting minister in the Prime Minister's department, Shahidan Kassim as saying that the National Social Council (NSC) meeting next week would discuss a proposal to limit the operating hours of eateries until 12 midnight as a measure to curb social ills.

Shahul Hameed said the 24-hour 'nasi kandar' restaurants were usually frequented by families in the local community who came to dine and no negative activities were involved.

"Besides that, these restaurants in Penang are also a legacy and a favorite among local residents and foreigners.

"For visitors to the state, 'nasi kandar' is the most popular menu especially from midnight to early morning," he added.

Iman Association president Mohamed Rabi Peer Mohd said the association recommends that the government monitor nightclubs and entertainment outlets operating late into the night to early morning.

"These are the main causes of social problems, especially among adolescents as they start taking to tobacco and drugs there.

"The government should also monitor 24-hour convenience stores, which also sell liqour," he said.

Mohamed Rabi said currently in Penang there are 120 24-hour Indian Muslim restaurants.

"Most of these restaurants offer free wifi and this gives a positive impact on consumers, especially students living in the university and college areas," he said.
