Make 1MDB report public, says Mahfuz

The auditor-general's preliminary report on 1MDB should be made public instead of being reserved for the Public Accounts Committee's (PAC) eyes only, PAS lawmaker Mahfuz Omar says.

"As a Member of Parliament, I have the right to know the status of the investigation," Mahfuz said in a press statement today.

Hence, the Pokok Sena MP insisted the report should be given to all MPs through a presentation at a special session in Parliament.

This way, Mahfuz ( photo ) said, the MPs could help the auditor-general with his investigations and even consider the issue from angles and perspectives that the auditor-general might have missed.

"The prime minister should call for a special parliamentary session to present the preliminary report if he truly has a high integrity," he added.

Auditor-General Ambrin Buang had been instructed by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to investigate 1MDB amid controversy about its RM42 billion debt.

Last month, it was announced that the auditor-general's report would only be presented to the PAC because it is only a preliminary report.

However, Mahfuz argued that even if it is just a preliminary report, it should not be hidden from the public.

"Because this issue has huge implications on the people, who in the end have to bear the costs of any abuse and wrongdoings in 1MDB," he said.

The preliminary report was initially slated to be released by the end of June, but would now be presented to the PAC on July 9.
