Water shortage in KT and Marang during Raya

The water shortage in Kuala Terengganu and Marang affecting 58,000 households since early May is expected to reach a critical stage by Aidilfitri.

Syarikat Air Terengganu Sdn Bhd (Satu) attributes the situation to the dry season and new housing areas, hotels and business complexes resulting in higher water consumption.

Its chief executive officer Ir Atemin Sulong said two measures taken by the company to minimise the situation were to lower the water pressure at night and carry out rationing between 11pm and 4am.

He said 50,000 of the affected households are in Kuala Terengganu, involving 47 villages.

The villages are in Paloh, Durian Burung, Pulau Rusa, Kuala Bekah, Wakaf Che Kapor, Pulau Musang, Sungai Rengas, Kubang Tangga, Kubang Parit, Simpang Empat Pulau Musang, Losong, Kubang Buyung, Pulau Kambing, Jalan Hiliran, Hiliran Jejawi, Cabang Tiga, Seberang Baruh and Seri Nilam.

Other villages are in Bukit Kechil, Gong Kapas, Pasir Panjang, Bukit Besar, Pengadang Baru, Wakaf Beruas, Wakaf Mempelam, Giant, Tok Jamal, Seberang Takir, Pulau Duyung, Bukit Tunggal, Serdang, Bukit Datu, Pengkalan Arang, Pak Katak, Bukit Tumbuh, Taman Semarak, Gong Kijang, Jalan Semarak, Banggol Pauh, Bukit Tok Beng, Kampung Duyung, Hulu Takir, Telaga Daing, Teluk Ketapang and Permint Perdana Seberang Takir.

Atemin said the other 8,000 affected households, in Marang, involve four areas, Tetambak Baru, Jalan Tanggol, Tanah Lot SPKA at Wakaf Tapai and Pengkalan Berangan.

He said the state government had agreed to build a few small water treatment plants at critical locations, which would be completed soon.

“Aside from that, the state government has also agreed to build a new water treatment plant with a capacity of 200 million litres per day in Kuala Nerus, which is expected to be completed in three years.

“Water will also be delivered by tanker lorries to critical areas,” he said, advising consumers to use water sparingly and to store adequate water for Aidilfitri.
