Razali: No buts about dress code, and no bikinis

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Razali Ibrahim today reminded certain quarters including the opposition not to question the dress code in government offices.

He said the matter should not be questioned or politicised as it was aimed at ensuring the people were well-mannered and disciplined when visiting government offices.

“The existing dress code does not only apply to certain races but to all,” Razali told reporters after chairing the Muar Umno committee members meeting yesterday.

“If the opposition does not agree with the dress code, they can introduce their own dress code in their states. We want to see if the public can wear shorts when meeting their chief minister and menteri besar,” he said.

Razali was asked to comment on incidents where several women, including a reporter, were blocked from entering government buildings allegedly for not wearing decent clothes, recently.

Razali opined such action was appropriate as a way to educate people because the dress code was in accordance with the country’s fifth principle of the Rukun Negara - Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan (Courtesy and Morality).

“Later on we don’t want anyone to come to the government offices wearing only bikini or strip naked in the public,” he said.

He said the dress code should not be loosened just because some quarters refused to comply with it and sparked controversy in social media while millions of the country’s citizens respected it.
