Don’t expect tax dept to probe its boss

YOURSAY ‘CEO of Inland Revenue Board reports directly to finance minister.’

Mahathir: Why hasn't tax dept raided Seri Perdana?

Fair Play: I can't help but feel that former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad has a whole range of arsenal at his disposal.

He just wants to prolong the agony like the cat playing with the mouse. He is still in charge of the situation, and he knows it.

On the other hand, the PM's supporters are just showing token support. Now they are trying to damage Wall Street Journal's credibility.

Dr Suresh Kumar: Mahathir was responsible for the rent-seeking culture that is openly effected through rake-offs on government contracts, or the appropriation of state assets by oligarchs and the relatives of politicians during his 22 years tenure as prime minister.

Did you come to know only now about tax evasion by these top officials? Are you sincere in your attacks against PM Najib Razak? Everyone is well aware of your motives but people have no choice, hence they are supporting you.

I demand that the taxman also pays you and your billionaire children a visit. Not to forget, all your past and present cronies.

Hank Marvin: Indeed, what is this old man talking about? It was he himself, during his 22-year-rule, who had demolished everything.

The tax department is one of the departments whose neutrality and integrity were destroyed by Mahathir.

Progressive: Indeed, Dr M has changed the entire landscape of this country negatively in his 22 years of disservice to our nation.

And now he is using this selectively to bring down a PM who did everything Mahathir wanted including putting former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim away, but Najib decided enough is enough.

Mahathir wants Najib to build the crooked bridge to Singapore, do not go ahead with the bullet train, and revert to Mahathir's raced-based apartheid policies.

Let us see Mahathir for what he is. With Najib out, Malay-first Muhyiddin Yassin will be a puppet PM for Malaysia. Do we want this?

Kawak: The CEO of Inland Revenue Board reports directly to the finance minister who is also the PM. How to investigate your boss?

'I served 29 yrs, but still can't afford PM's lifestyle'

Transformasi: Mahathir, aren't your children doing extremely well? Do you think they could have amassed their fortunes through sheer good luck and talent?

In fact, Mukhriz has recently allegedly bought a new Rolls-Royce as his official car. I wonder if he paid for it or did the people of Kedah sponsor his new gilded carriage?

Mosquitobrain: I wholeheartedly agree with Tun. All individuals are equal in the eyes of law. Any doubtful income has to be investigated by the taxman without prejudice.

Oh Ya?: All these Umnoputras are birds of the same feathers. The only difference - one may be better at disguising and manipulating than the other.

Najib didn't take our money, insists 1MDB

Meh: The statement by 1MDB is the most imbecile and puerile that I have ever come across. What do we expect you to say? That yes, indeed the money came from you?

No, Wall Street Journal ( WSJ ) was not attacking 1MDB. They were training their guns directly at Najib. Najib must reply. It is no business of 1MDB to reply.

Abasir: Anyway, the language used by 1MDB is interesting. "1MDB wishes to make clear that the company has never provided any funds to the prime minister."

That will be true because "the cash came from a company registered in the British Virgin Islands via a Swiss bank owned by an Abu Dhabi state fund."

FellowMalaysian: Everyone expects 1MDB to come out and defend Najib vehemently in denying WSJ 's claim that US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) was transferred into his bank accounts.

After all, the intricate maze of companies, banks and transactions which 1MDB had resorted to when transferring the funds were done for a specific reason - to obfuscate its paths.

Since Najib's name has been mentioned in the WSJ report as the recipient of 1MDB funds, perhaps Najib will do himself a lot of good and save many investigators' time by declaring that this is an outright lie and he will file a suit against WSJ for libel.

Basically: Firstly, it's our money not 1MDB's, so instead of a standard template denial, 1MDB should provide detailed rebuttals to specific allegations, or actually, the government, since this is Finance Ministry's firm, needs to come out with details of their probe, not just blanket denials and accusations of misreporting and tampering of emails.

It's just basic accountability. I hope we taxpayers aren’t asking too much of our dear government.

Hang Babeuf: Najib never took 1MDB funds for personal use, Putrajaya says, after money is linked to PM's accounts.

He did it just to corrupt the entire political system, suborn the democratic electoral process, and pervert the expression of the people's choice.

But, so they contend, there was no "personal", individual mercenary or pecuniary gain - so that is okay: all quite "kosher" and halal.

Or is it? I think not.
