Wanita Umno exco member Azizah Harun was sworn in as a member of the senate today before Dewan Negara president Abu Zahar Ujang in Kuala Lumpur.

Azizah, who is also the Sepang Wanita Umno chief, was appointed for her first term, from 2015 to 2018.

While welcoming the appointment of Azizah, Abu Zahar drew attention to the fact that all members of Parliament consisting of the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara should be loyal to Malaysia, as well as defend and protect the constitution of the country.

He said that as members of Parliament, they should understand and appreciate the parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy practiced in Malaysia since its independence.

“The decision of running the state democratically through general elections every five years, must be respected by all the people, especially members of Parliament itself, there should never be an attempt to sabotage or bring down a government without going through the democratic process... to safguard the harmony and prosperity of all citizens,” he said.

Expressing his concern on the present situation, Abu Zahar said all parties should think rationally, and never do things that fell outside of the constitution and democratic system of governance.

Earlier, while congratulating the appointment of Azizah, he hoped members, especially those who were elected senators for the first time, would perform their duties wisely, while providing beneficial contributions to the people and the country.

“Honourable Members, especially those newly appointed, are advised not to waste time, and show their ability as soon as they are sworn in. This is not a place to play around or perform theatrics, as this is an honorable Dewan to make the laws of the country,” he said.

Azizah, 56, is currently the senior supervisor of the Community Development Department (Kemas), under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry.
