A BN lawmaker has dismissed calls from various quarters for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to step down, saying nobody is entitled to make such demands.

According to Kalabakan MP Abdul Ghapur Salleh, there is no need to entertain such calls as the prime minister was elected by the people and Umno.

"The allegation that some US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) from 1MDB funds have been channeled into the prime minister's accounts is something which does not make sense.

"This is a lie from a certain individual and the opposition.

"The people should not believe the wild and baseless allegations by The Wall Street Journal ," he was quoted as saying by Umno Online .

Although Ghapur did not mention who the "individual" is, Najib had previously accused former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad ( photo ) of masterminding the report.

Denying the allegation, the prime minister also claimed that it was part of a political sabotage against him.

Numerous quarters have called on Najib to take leave until the completion of the probe into the matter.

Today, the special taskforce investigating the claim revealed that it had frozen six bank accounts in relation to the case.

Malaysiakini learnt that three of the accounts belonged to Najib .
