Young activists rue 'directionless' opposition

PKR, DAP and Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) were unable to present coherent plan to rebuild a new opposition coalition, said Demi Malaysia, an NGO comprising young activists.

This followed a meeting between 146 Demi Malaysia activists and opposition figures from the three groups yesterday.

"To sum it up, we were skeptical about the commitment and determination of the opposition parties that appear unprepared, unable to agree and in limbo in finding ways to rebuild the opposition coalition," Demi Malaysia said in a statement today.

During the meeting, PKR was represented by its vice-president Tian Chua while DAP was represented by Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming, Bukit Gasing state assemblyperson R Rajiv and Mengkibol state assemblyperson Tan Hong Pin.

GHB was represented by Shah Alam MP Khalid Abdul Samad and Faiz Fadzil.

"Criticism and questions were repeatedly put to the political representatives but  many questions were not answered clearly.

"Most questions revolved around the directionless nature of the opposition which appear unable to resolve the crisis of cooperation among the parties," it said.

Demi Malaysia added that the opposition parties also could not give clear answers on who would be their candidate for prime minister and the composition of the shadow cabinet.

The group also urged DAP, PKR and PAS to formally announce Pakatan's demise in a joint-statement and form a new coalition.

Representatives were receptive of the idea, except Chua, who told Demi Rakyat that Pakatan's status was up for debate.

Demi Malaysia was established following the break up of Pakatan as a pressure group to establish a new opposition coalition.
