KINIBIZ We Malaysians have some sense of humour. So much so that earlier this month, as the scandal around 1MDB expanded further into grave allegations against the prime minister himself, the ensuing satire and caustic jokes on social media caught the attention of UK-based BBC.

In this regard we have been terrific. Our capacity for humour has been consistently inexhaustible even as the scandal deepens by the day, the latest being the humorous reactions on social media following the surprise cabinet reshuffle and sacking of the attorney-general on Tuesday.

It brings to mind a memorable dialogue by the character Chandler Bing from the 1990s television series ‘Friends’. Introducing himself to a former boyfriend of his girlfriend, he said: “Hi, I’m Chandler, I make jokes when I’m uncomfortable.” And I wonder if, in these dark days, we do not do the same.

We are a nation in deep crisis. With Malaysia’s 52nd birthday less than two months away, we have lost much time and opportunity to progress as a society due to the rapaciousness of the elite. Worse, we are slipping down a downward spiral into a darker state unknown. And we can only fear the worst for our children.
