Lives at stake at KLIA2, laments 'Iron Lady'

Rafidah Aziz has criticised Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd's (MAHB) "naive and callous" handling of defects at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2, reminding it that lives are at stake.

The former minister was responding to a news report quoting MAHB managing director Badlisham Ghazali, who said the defects only comprise a small percentage of KLIA2 and that closing the airport would not resolve the soil settlement issue.

"How naive and callous can some people be? Any airport must strive to achieve zero defect.

"It is that tiny odd percentage of defect that can cause problems, for example, soil depressions and subsidence in one spot can cause problems for planes with people on board.

"Airlines are dealing with lives every day," she said in a Facebook posting.

Rafidah, who is best known for her outspokenness during her tenure in the government and is often described as Malaysia's "Iron Lady", is also AirAsia X chairperson.

"We are all responsible for so many lives, the airliners are the airport's clients, surely there must be a client charter guiding them?" she said.

Rafidah said airport operators should not treat airports like shopping malls, restaurants or grocery stores.

"It takes only one incident - the almighty God forbids - to have endless repercussions for the country.

"Please don't quote profits running airports in other countries. Solve the serious problems at KLIA2 first in Malaysia," she said.
