Damage control - it’s now about political funding

YOURSAY ‘We asked about apples and Abdul Rahman talked about oranges.’

Opposition stumbling block to political funding reform

Exranger: Abdul Rahman Dahlan, I read your article a quarter way in and I felt so disgusted that I was not able to continue reading it. As a minister, we expect you to put forward smarter points and something logical with facts.

Political funding goes into parties' accounts, not personal accounts. Even your own party members are clueless about it, so what's the real story behind the RM2.6 billion in PM’s accounts?

FellowMalaysian: Abdul Rahman said DAP is against making political funding and donations transparent. Is minister Abdul Rahman trying to justify the RM2.6 billion PM Najib Razak is alleged to have received and is making DAP guilty and responsible for not disclosing its sources of funding?

Abdul Rahman must be treading in deep waters.

Lucas: Yes, Umno the plucky and honest underdog is bravely struggling against the rich DAP and PKR. It makes perfect sense.

Goldee: This minister is talking nonsense, contributions to a party and banking in a huge amount of money into a particular person's own account are two different issues.

The Mask: We asked about apples and Abdul Rahman talked about oranges. Is the movement of RM2.6 billion legal? Doesn't Bank Negara have rules about movement of money in such large amounts?

Did the Income Tax Department know about this? And has tax been paid for it? If the donation is okay by your reasoning, then why did Najib not admit to receiving it in his account? He must then know that it was a crime.

Finally, why the sudden cabinet reshuffle in the midst of the investigations on the matter? If you cannot see the implication, then you are worse than a moron.

Kawak: Abdul Rahman, I am not impressed with your lengthy discourse. We the rakyat just want to know the ultimate source of funds that was allegedly deposited into the PM’s personal bank accounts and the final destinations of these funds. Period.

Vision2020: Unless Abdul Rahman can show the rakyat that political funds were deposited directly into opposition leaders' accounts like those of Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang or Abdul Hadi Awang, then he is just spinning tales.

Speaking Sense: Poppycock. The issue is not political funding at this point. That is another subject on which much can also be said about corruption in Umno-BN's sources of funds. But that's for another day.

The issues now as everyone knows are:

1) Was public money in 1MDB channelled illegally to dubious joint ventures and companies and private individuals to cheat the country and enrich these people? Will these criminals be brought to justice?

2) Did RM2.6 billion ringgit go into the personal (not party, stupid) account of the country's PM and if so why, where did it come from and where is it now? The PM owes it to the people to give Malaysians a straight and honest answer.

This has not been done and no amount of grandstanding and ‘holier than thous’ from his minions can change that.

Many in Umno may be stupid and easily deceived by the likes of Abdul Rahman and his evading of the real issues, but the majority of Malaysians are not so foolish or gullible. We want answers, not a smokescreen.

RCZ: Now starts the Umno spinmasters' explanations on the billions reported to have gone into Najib's account.

One must not forget that SRC International's money is government money and not third party funding, and it would be criminal breach of trust once it lands in a prime minister's personal account.

Wong Fei Hoong: What stupid reasoning. In the first place, who donated the alleged RM2.6 billion to Najib? Can you name the person or organisation? And why is Najib keeping quiet about it?

Till today, he has neither admitted nor denied that RM2.6 billion had been transferred to his personal bank accounts.

Avatar 11: How can we have someone with the mentality of Abdul Rahman as our minister? He cannot differentiate right from wrong, but still stands up for wrong deeds committed using the most stupid arguments.

Everyone can see the difference between political donations and the embezzlement of public funds.

Franco : Why didn't the government of the day push for reforms in political funding? If it's declared that such has to be done, then it has to be done, regardless of DAP objecting to it.

You have bulldozed other detrimental agenda, but you can’t bulldoze a good proposal like this, and that too with the agreement of the PM?

Eagle : Indeed, if BN really wanted the donations reforms it could easily have it. They have the numbers in Parliament. So why blame DAP when it has only fewer than 25 percent of seats in Parliament?
