Hearing might help 1MDB, says deputy PAC chief

Deputy Public Accounts Committee chairperson Dr Tan Seng Giaw said that the committee would proceed with its hearing on 1MDB tomorrow.

"In line with the wishes of the public, PAC members will attend the hearing at the Dewan Rakyat at 10am tomorrow," said Tan in a press release today.

Tan was responding to a statement by BN strategic communications chief Abdul Rahman Dahlan who said that the elevation of four PAC members as cabinet minister or deputy ministers would not affect PAC investigations on 1MDB.

He said that if Abdul Rahman believed this to be true, thus PAC should be allowed to proceed its hearing without any interference.

"Moreover, if the truth is uncovered, the allegations against 1MDB might be proved wrong earlier. This is strategic (for 1MDB)," said Tan.

The PAC is scheduled to hear evidence from former 1MDB CEO Shahrol Ibrahim Halimi tomorrow. 1MDB chairperson Arul Kanda and former CEO Mohd Hazem Abdul Rahman are scheduled to appear on Wednesday and Thursday.

Two 1MDB directors - Azlan Mohd Zainol and Mohd Bakke Salleh - who quit 1MDB in 2009 were scheduled to testify on Aug 17.

Previously, Tan had argued that the Standing Orders allow the PAC to continue meeting in the abscence of chairperson and that the quorum of three was required to hold meetings.

However, Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia said that the Standing Orders does not allow the hearing to take place since the position of PAC chairperson was vacant.

Nur Jazlan Mohamed was forced to relinquish his position as PAC chairperson because he was appointed deputy home minister on Tuesday.
