Two Umno vice-presidents are drawing up measures to clear the air and confusion among party members following the recent cabinet reshuffle.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is one of the Umno vice-presidents, said he had discussed with the other, Hishammuddin Hussein, on the measures to be implemented to clarify the issues.

The explanations would include on deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin's commitment to continue the party's struggle although he was dropped from the new cabinet line-up announced on Tuesday, said Ahmad Zahid.

"Besides discussing on how to unite Umno (members), we as the vice- presidents also discussed the steps to be taken to clarify the situation so that what has been raised by Muhyiddin will be respected by all."

He said this to reporters after receiving a courtesy call from Hishammuddin, who is also Defence Minister, at his office, here, today.

Outside elements

The cabinet reshuffle on July 28 saw the appointment of Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, as the new deputy prime minister, replacing Muhyiddin.

Muhyiddin had, among others, accepted Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's decision and had committed to carrying out his duties as Umno deputy president and helping to strengthen the party in facing the next general election.

Ahmad Zahid said he and Hishammuddin had agreed that the measures should be implemented immediately to prevent outside elements from undermining the party leadership.

"Although it will take time, we believe that the proposed measures will clear up the air and confusion although on the whole, the members remain together with the party leadership and government," he said. - Bernama
