MCMC to meet stakeholders before changes to Act

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will meet with 45 stakeholders in the Internet service before amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 are made in October.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Jailani Johari said in a revision on the two Acts, MCMC not only looked in terms of cyber media control but also from the development aspect to improve existing services.

“These Acts (Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998) are being reviewed with amendements to be done in October and MCMC is looking in terms of development, which constantly change from time to time,” Jailani ( photo ) told reporters after the Aidilfitri event in Kampung Tok Lawit in Hulu Terengganu last night.

He said the meeting with the stakeholders was important to obtain various views and opinions before amendments to the two laws were made.

Various forms of punishment and action that could be taken against Internet offenders were also being revised to ensure its effectiveness in future.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak had said in Putrajaya yesterday that the proposed amendments to the two Acts were not intended to curb the freedom of the people to use the social media and Internet.

He said it was to ensure the borderless world was not abused to the extent that it could lead to crimes being committed.
