Ignore M'sian extradition request, Interpol told

Switzerland-based Bruno Manser Fund has urged Interpol to snub Malaysia's attempt to put Sarawak Report editor-in-chief Clare Rewcastle Brown on the international police organisation's red list of wanted persons.

"In a personal message to Interpol president, Mireille Ballestrazzi and secretary-general, Jürgen Stock, BMF director Lukas Straumann asked that Interpol refuse to accept the Malaysian application to place Clare Rewcastle-Brown on the red notice as requested by the Malaysians," it said in a statement today.

This was after the Malaysian police yesterday announced that it had obtained an arrest warrant against Rewcastle-Brown under Section 124B and 124I of the Penal Code.

Section 124B concerns 'activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy' while 124I concerns 'publishing false statements that may cause public alarm'.

Bukit Aman said that it was trying to get Rewcastle-Brown placed on Interpol's red list.

Topple government claim

Rewcastle-Brown, who runs the whistleblower portal Sarawak Report based in the UK, has doggedly reported on allegations of misappropriation against Malaysia's finance ministry-owned 1MDB.

The government had accused Rewcastle-Brown, who is Malaysian-born but a UK citizen, of trying to topple the government through her reports.

BMF, however, described the extradition request as a desperate attempt to silence her.

It added the attempt to put Rewcastle-Brown on the red list was an abuse and should not be condoned by a respectable multilateral organisation such as the Interpol.
