'MACC must walk talk - question Najib now'

Opposition lawmaker Gobind Singh Deo today challenged the MACC to walk its talk and immediately question Prime Minister Najib Razak over the RM2.6 billion donation deposited into his account.

This was despite the opposition leaders visiting MACC today to show solidarity as it has had several of its staff arrested by the police recently, with some having their homes and offices raided by police.

"I challenge the MACC to show us that they are serious when it comes to investigations relating to the RM2.6 billion deposited in the premier's account," said the DAP Puchong MP in a statement today.

"There is no point in making public statements which generate sympathy alone. They shouldn't be afraid," Gobind added.

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang ( photo ) was among the leaders who visited the MACC headquarters  earlier today.

Last night, Lim admitted that he has been critical of MACC, but he felt it was the responsibility of citizens to protect the institution from Najib.

Gobind asserted the MACC must demonstrate that it is fair in its dealings with everyone and does not practise double standards.

He compared MACC's commitment to summon Najib and the death in custody of Teoh Beng Hock, who was the political secretary of Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah.

"When it came to a matter of RM2400, the MACC acted immediately. They hauled in Teoh and kept him at their offices until the early morning of the next day. They subjected him to intense interrogation and he was not given access to his lawyers.

"So what are they waiting for now that they have confirmed that they will question the prime minister over the so-called RM2.6 billion in his account?" he questioned.

Teoh was taken to Selangor MACC as witness on July 15, 2009 and found dead the next day.

"The MACC is a creature of statute. It has wide powers, including powers of arrest and detention for the purposes of investigations. There are also provisions in place for the MACC to deal with those who interfere with its work.

"What then are they waiting for?" asked Gobind, who is also the DAP legal bureau chairperson.

"The MACC must not betray the trust placed in them by Parliament. They must do their job effectively without fear or favour.”

RM42 million out of RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib's private bank account originated from SRC International.
