Cops: Media freedom backers can rally but not march

Police have approved the ‘Perhimpunan 808' or ‘Assembly 808' to be held opposite the Bar Council office, Jalan Benteng, in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow to protest against the suspension of the newspaper owned by The Edge Media Group.

The assembly organisers, however, were reminded against doing anything that contravened the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, including holding a procession.

Dang Wangi OCPD ACP Zainol Samah said the organisers had given their assurance that the assembly would be held in an orderly manner and police did not want the assembly to jeopardise public peace during the event.

"Any procession is totally prohibited and is subject to PAA 2012. If the situation gets out of hand, police will act for breaching the PAA," he said when contacted by Bernama .

Earlier, a representative of the assembly organisers, Mohd Radzi Abdul Razak, had met Zainol at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters this morning to give feedback on the number of participants expected to turn up, as well as the programme details and legal provisions for the assembly.

The assembly, expected to begin about 11.30am and end at 1.30pm, is being held by a group of media activists to show solidarity in opposing the suspension of the newspapers The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily .

The publication permits for the two newspapers have been suspended for three months, effective July 27.

The suspensions were made after the Home Ministry stated that the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue reported by the two newspapers were detrimental to public peace and threatened national security.
