Khairy wants Parliament sitting to pick PAC chair

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin today called for a sitting of Parliament as soon as possible to appoint a new Public Accounts Committee chairperson.

Khairy, who is also the Youth and Sports Minister, said this was urgent as the committee is conducting the investigations into the 1MDB scandal which has become a big issue in the country.

"If possible, we should hurry the appointment of the new PAC members, not only to hasten its formation but to allow the committee to investigate this big issue that cannot be postponed any further," he said at his ministry's Hari Raya gathering at the Bukit Jalil Sports Centre.

Prior to this, BN Backbenchers club president Shahrir Abdul Samad ( photo ) called for a Parliament sitting for the appointment of a new PAC chairperson and the replacement of three other BN members who have since been given government posts.

Shahrir, who is also Johor Baru MP, said the Parliament session could be held next month and there was no need to wait until the next parliamentary session, which has been scheduled for October.

"This pro-active approach is needed so that the PAC can have a new chairperson for it to investigate the 1MDB issue," Shahrir said.

Without a PAC chairperson, PAC cannot continue with its investigation into 1MDB or call witnesses to participate in the ongoing inquiry.

The PAC hearing was supposed to resume last week with the calling of 1MDB's chief executive officer, Arul Kanda Kandasamy, and former CEOs Shahrol Ibrahim Halimi and Mohd Hazem Abdul Rahman to testify.

However, the hearing had to be postponed after PAC chairperson Nur Jazlan Mohamed was appointed as deputy home minister.
