'Kedah MB's double pay hike unacceptable'

PAS' Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar has called for the reversal of the salary hike for Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir and members of the state government.

Mahfuz said while he endorsed Kedah's move to increase the salaries of its state assemblypersons, the hike for the menteri besar, exco members, speaker and deputy speaker should be scrapped.

This, he said, is because those posts are also held by state assemblypersons, which would mean they will get a double pay hike - one as a state assemblypersons and one for their post.

"I agree the basic salary of state assemblypersons being increased from RM4,112 to RM11,000 a month will allow them to improve their services for the rakyat.

"But I do not think the rakyat can accept the salary hike for the speaker, deputy speaker, menteri besar and exco members, who at the same time also enjoy the salary of a state assemblyperson," said Mahfuz in a statement today.

Mahfuz acknowledged that while the Kedah state assembly speaker was not a state assemblyperson, he also received the salary of a state assemblyperson on top of the speaker's salary.

"For example, the hike would mean the house speaker would get a salary of RM25,000 a month - RM14,000 as speaker and RM11,000 as state assemblyperson - even though he is not (a state rep)," he said.

Mahfuz said the deputy speaker would enjoy a total of RM18,000 while exco members would enjoy a total of RM25,000 a month while the menteri besar would get RM33,000 in total.

"Why is there a need to increase the salary for other positions at a time when the menteri besar had been complaining about a lack of revenue while having to bear high costs?" he said.
