Don't let racial conflict ruin this nation, says ex-IGP

Former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan has expressed concern over the incidents which transpired during Bersih 4 over the weekend.

He criticised protesters who stomped on an image of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

Though he agreed that Malaysians have the right to express their discontent, he however emphasised on the need to be responsible in a multiracial and multireligious nation.

"We do not wish to see a recurrence of what happened in the past," Musa told Malaysiakini in reference to the May 13, 1969 race riots.

"We don't want this country to be destroyed by racial conflict. People must come to their senses and be responsible

"You have the right to voice concerns, but do not demonise other people and other races. Differences of opinion is fine, but there is a need for respect," he added.

Musa said he had been a police officer for decades and strove to maintain peace and security in the nation during his service.

Based on his experience, he warned that racial issues could be a time bomb.

In a series of tweets earlier in response to two Bersih 4 supporters, the former police chief also commented on the matter.

"The Malays do not cause trouble in other people's countries, so don't make trouble in this country," he said, and stressed on the need for Malays to work together.
