'Bersih 4 Chinese numbers no indication of MCA rejection'

MCA today downplayed the large turnout of Chinese at the Bersih 4 rally last weekend, arguing that this was no indication that support for MCA was non-existent.

"The rally was not an indication of Chinese support (for MCA).

"The presence of those at the rally does not mean they reject a particular party," MCA president Liow Tiong Lai told a press conference at the party's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

A recording of the press conference had to be obtained by Malaysiakini as this news portal was barred from attending the press conference for undislcosed reasons.

MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong ( photo ) who was also present, pointed out that even though the Bersih 1 rally in 2007 was dominated by Malays, MCA loss substantial support in the general election the following year.

"We need to look at the hypothesis that said that for Bersih 1, 80 percent of the participants were Malays and 20 percent were non-Malays.

"(At that time), MCA had 31 (parliamentary) seats but in 2008, it became 15.

"So even with a 20 percent non-Malay turnout (then), we were still affected," he said.

Therefore, Wee said, the racial make-up of any Bersih protest could not be an indication of the support level for MCA.
