Avoid three-cornered election fights, PAS and Amanah told

PAS and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) should set aside their egos to work out how they will contest in the next general election, without facing each other in three-cornered fights, a PAS lawmaker says.

"Contests between ourselves in the opposition during the next general election will crush the people's hope for a new Malaysia.

"Don't let the people despite opposition leaders, like they despise the government, simply because of your ego and stubbornness," Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar said in a statement today.

The former PAS information chief said Amanah should not be viewed as a threat and should be welcomed into the opposition.

Amanah was set up by former progressive PAS members, who were ousted from the party leadership by the ulama in the 61st PAS muktamar in June.

This included Mahfuz, who did not cross over like his former compatriots.

The progressives have taken over The Worker's Party and renamed it to Parti Amanah Negara after their bid to form Parti Progesif Islam was not approved by the Registrar of Societies.

According to Sinar Harian , Amanah ran out of membership forms after all 35,000 forms it printed were taken up in the last three days.

Amanah secretary Anuar Tahir said membership applications have come from Malays as well as from Indians and Chinese who used to be part of the PAS Supporters Wing.

He believes the party can get 50,000 members within a month.
