Second 'Nomad' installed in Kota Belud to solve water crisis

The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry has installed a second mobile water treatment unit called 'Nomad' at the Tambulion Laut river, Kota Belud, Sabah, to resolve the water crisis in the district.

Its Minister Maximus Ongkili said 'Nomad,' with generate a capacity of three million litres daily and accommodate the needs of about 13,000 people in the district.

He said the decision to bring in the second unit with bigger water capacity was to provide relief to the people in light of the water supply disruption in the district following the earthquake and ensuing mudfloods at the Kadamaian River.

"This immediate and temporary measure was also undertaken for Ranau when the first Nomad with capacity of one million litres daily was dispatched to the district in July.

"The units loaned to the affected districts are owned by the National Water Services Commission," he said at launching of the Nomad here today.

Long-term solution

Ongkili said for the long-term solution, the federal government would be assisting the state water department to look for an alternative water source as the main water source, Kadamaian River, had been declared by experts as unsafe for consumption without proper treatment.

He said based on a study conducted by the experts from University Malaysia Sabah, siltation and presence of granite from Mount Kinabalu had occurred at the river, which used to fulfill 90 percent of the district's water supply needs, following a series of mudfloods in June and July.

"The cost of treatment and filtration is also very high. Hence, the ministry will fund about RM2 million for the required study and research by the experts to identify alternative water sources," he said, adding that this might take about six months to a year to complete.
