The Home Ministry reiterated today that former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been provided with professional medical help by the Prisons Department, in line with the Prisons Act 1995.

Its secretary-general Alwi Ibrahim said in a statement that the management of all inmates is based on the Act and the Prison Regulations 2000.

“Let me stress that all suggestions, considerations and decisions relating to Anwar's treatment are in line with the two provisions cited and this is being implemented professionally.

“Anwar's placement at the (Sungai Buloh) prison clinic cell, the assistance provided, including supplements as suggested by the medical officer, are given in consideration of the importance of his health condition.

“Other inmates are also given their alternative diet or supplementary diet, as suggested by the medical officers.”

On the issue of Anwar's right shoulder injury, Alwi said till now the Prisons Department had yet to receive any decision from the respected parties on the type of treatment, surgery or experts whom they wanted to seek.

Medical panel decides

He said the Prisons Department has not disregarded the check-up or health treatment sought by Anwar and every decision and suggestion was based on what was decided by the medical panel.

These include taking Anwar to Hospital Kuala Lumpur to be examined and to undergo further treatment from orthopaedics from Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, as requested by his family, Alwi said.

All the proposals made by the medical officers, he added, are based on the Act and regulations and done by the Prisons Department.

Alwi also cited Section 37(1) the Prisons Act 1995, which states that any inmate should be given treatment at the government hospital and it is the responsibility of the Prisons Department to take the inmate to the government hospital for medical examination.

Alwi said this in reference to media reports that no proper treatment was given to the PKR de-facto leader, with his lawyer Sivarasa Rasiah having complained that the Health Ministry “lied” in saying that Anwar did not need “intensive physiotherapy” for his two-year-old shoulder injury, which the lawyer described as “shocking, irresponsible and a lie”.
