Faced with closure due to lack of funds, the Yasmin Ahmad Museum will continue to share the legacy of the filmmaker after raising RM83,015 through public donations.

The Ipoh museum dubbed ‘ Yasmin at Kong Heng ’ is kept alive through donations from 132 donors from Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Cambodia and New Zealand.

“God willing, Yasmin’s work will continue to move Malaysians to understand and love each other as she did and inspire them to greater, kinder things,” Yasmin’s sister and Yasmin Ahmad Society representative Orked Ahmad said in a statement.

The funds will be used to pay for operating costs, conduct free workshops and improve exhibits, including creating a permanent installation on Yasmin’s work.

Yasmin was executive creative director at advertising agency Leo Burnett, where she was responsible for thoughtful and heart-rending advertisements including for national oil company Petronas.

She later directed several feature films including the much-loved ‘Sepet’.

“I cannot thank the public enough for continuing to love Yasmin. I lup chew ,” Yasmin’s mother and museum founder Mak Inom, said, using the phrase oft-used by the filmmaker to mean ‘I love you’.

The society said it will continue to seek public donations, to meet its goal of US$70,000 (RM293,598) in hopes of better serving museum visitors.
