The National Oversight and Whistleblowers Centre (Now) is going on a multi-state roadshow to alert Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (Yapeim) contributors of what it claims to be wastages by the government Islamic foundation.

Now director, Akmal Nasir said it is the centre’s obligation to spread the word following their multiple exposes of Yapeim’s overseas programmes, which cost hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

“I believe it is it our obligation to ensure Yapiem returns to its main charitable objective.

“There are 588,930 contributors and each deserve to know their rights and what they can do to ensure their contributions go to the poor and needy, who are supposed to be assisted by Yapeim,” he said in a statement.

The roadshow will kick off at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall tomorrow, followed by stops at Alor Setar, Padang Serai, Jerai, Merbok, Perak, Muar and Segamat.

It will also stop in Pahang but the exact destination is yet to be determined.

NOW, which was founded by PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli, previously exposed that Yapeim partly-funded marriage courses attended by less than a hundred students in Paris, and is paying an Umno leader and her family close to RM2 million a year for various posts in Yapeim companies.

It exposed that Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom travelled to the United States with his wife to officiate a marriage course there, but the itinerary also included a round of golf and a trip to a premium brands outlet.

Jamil, however, said that he was there on official business and the golf game was hosted by the Malaysian High Commission there.

Jamil and Yapeim are suing Akmal and NOW over the matter.

Yapeim also said it has a thriving Ar-Rahnu business and is paying for these programmes with these profits.
