TPPA good for Felda, better returns for settlers

Malaysia's participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) provides a great opportunity for Felda to further expand its market overseas, particularly in Latin America, its chairperson Mohd Isa Abdul Samad said.

Brushing aside a claim that by joining the TPPA, Malaysia is surrendering its sovereignty to the US, he said, "This is not true at all. As Felda has a factory in the US, does it mean that we had colonised America? No.

"Instead, under the TPPA, we can further expand our market. We've started making plans to expand into Latin America," he said at the launch of the Felda Raja Alias 1's Family Literacy Centre in Jempol near Kuala Pilah today.

Isa, who is also Member of Parliament for Jempol, said Felda would not be affected by the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement and the interests of its settlers were guaranteed.

Speaking to reporters later, he said the TPPA would enable Felda to make more profit and give better returns to settlers.

Trade ministers from 12 nations, including Malaysia, involved in the TPPA negotiations, officially signed the trade pact in Auckland today.
