Two held over offensive content on social media

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has arrested two men who allegedly uploaded offensive content onto the social media network in December last year.

MCMC said today the men, aged 26 and 57, were picked up in raids early this week in Alor Setar and Kota Baru, respectively.

“The communications equipment of the suspects was confiscated to facilitate investigations,” it said in a statement.

MCMC said the improper use of networks or services was an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“This includes posting any comment, request, suggestion or other communication which is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in nature with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person.

“A person who commits an offence under this section shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year or both,” it said.
