'Papagomo-style bashing of migrants commonplace'

Incidents such as blogger Papagomo's infamous assault of a Pakistani worker is commonplace for many migrants and refugees in the country, says migrant rights group Tenaganita.

"This undue aggression that we commonly see perpetrated against migrants and refugees has got to stop.

"Migrants are abused on a daily basis not just by employers, but by regular Malaysians who are stressed from a hard day at work and the like," said Tenaganita executive director Glorene A Das.

Papagomo, whose real name is Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, had attacked a worker he alleged had sexually harassed his sister.

A video of the incident showed Papagomo punching the worker twice, slapping him thrice and further kicking him twice. The worker did not retaliate.

"What our Malaysian brother did was not only bullying but it was also illegal.

"Taking justice into one's own hands is not the approach to handle such matters, as there is tremendous amount of danger," said Glorene.

However Glorene said the police should also look into Papagomo's allegation of sexual harassment, as well as claims that police reacted too slowly.

"If indeed the migrant had sexually harassed the woman, then yes, by all means, he would have to serve his sentence," she said, but stressed the sentence should be meted out by the courts.
