'PAS acting like fools over Chinese deity costume row'

Pro-Umno portal MyKMU.net today hit out at PAS members for acting like fools after the cultural gaffe involving its Paya Jaras state assemblyperson Mohd Khairuddin Othman who had dressed up as a “Chinese deity” during the recent Chinese New Year celebrations.

In a posting, the portal said that PAS had mercilessly attacked Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak who wore a kurta and accepted a garland of flowers around his neck during the Thaipusam celebrations at Batu Caves in 2012.

“PAS Youth at that time was showing its strength, (even) seeking interference from the Fatwa Council (on the issue). It had no other intentions than to accuse Najib of insulting Islam.

“Today, however, when there is a PAS rep who had dressed up as a ‘Chinese deity’, suddenly the entire PAS organisation became fools… It didn't know what to say,” the portal claimed, adding it shows how PAS is just like any other political party that exists merely for power and votes.

Khairuddin ( photo ) had said he was prepared to face censure from the party's Ulama Council after realising that the costume he had donned likened him to one of the eight immortals of the Tao pantheon, Cao Guojiu, which he initially thought was a Chinese emperor.

PAS Ulama Council deputy chief Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, however, described the incident as a “ misunderstanding ”, saying Khairuddin did not mean to go against religious boundaries nor did he mean to insult Islam.

Referring to the Ulama Council's statement, MyKMU said that it merely strengthened its claims of PAS’ hypocrisy in upholding Islamic principles.

“Even after having worn the costume, they (Ulama Council) can still say there was no intention (to insult Islam)? What a stupid excuse (misunderstanding) but because they are in the same gang (PAS), they just have to accept (Khairuddin’s explanations).

“It is difficult when religion is mixed with politics. When it comes to others (Najib), you are so quick to condemn, but when it is your own doing, everything's okay, everything is fine,” the portal said.

It also said that it had consistently branded PAS as being just like any other political party that places votes above all other considerations, including religion.

“That's why they (PAS) should not have colluded with the DAP and be guided solely by (number of) votes… this is what will happen.

“Ironically, even the DAP did not do this (dress up like a deity). PAS is the one that has gone overboard,” said the portal.
