Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem must be the envy of recording artistes for raising RM1.4 million by rendering just four songs.

During a Chinese New Year bash in Sibu last night, the 72-year-old politician sang evergreen hits such as Elvis Presley’s ‘Can’t help falling in Love’, Cliff Richard’s ‘The Young Ones’ and ‘Travelling Light’, as well as P Ramlee’s ‘Putus Sudah Kasih Sayang’.

Adenan was accompanied by the band D’Cipta from the state social development and urbanisation ministry.

According to reports, the chief minister managed to garner contributions from 20 donors comprising those from the private sector, NGOs, individuals and guests.

The RM1.4 million would be used to help patients suffering from diabetes and kidney ailments.

In his speech earlier, Adenan said he needed another five years to lead the state, which is to witness an election soon, before retiring.

“Age and health factors do not permit me to lead longer than that,” he was quoted as saying.

Adenan said since becoming chief minister on Feb 28 last year, he has implemented 50 policies for the state and vowed to do more if given the opportunity to continue at the helm.

He also stressed that Sarawak’s real wealth is its diverse population, unity and mutual respect.

Also present at the event was his predecessor and current governor of Sarawak, Abdul Taib Mahmud.
