Two Umno leaders today claimed trial to charges of corruption at the Alor Setar Sessions Court yesterday.

Permatang Pauh treasurer Nor Azamuddin Ahmad and division youth chief Farid Idris Khan were charged with committing the crime at Persiaran KTC 4/3, Kulim Techno City Golf View, Kulim in 2014, Sinar Harian reported.

Nor Azamuddin is charged with taking a bribe of RM45,000 from a businessman in return for 100 tonnes of ST15 rice quota from the Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry in May 2014.

Nor Azamuddin was also charged with receiving two more bribes of RM45,000 each from the same individual in June and July 2014, the daily reported.

Farid was charged with abetting Nor Azamuddin in the three incidents.

They are charged under Section 16(a)(A) and Section 28 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, and can be punished under Section 24 of the same Act.

If convicted, they can be jailed for up to 20 years and fined no less than RM10,000 or five times the quantum of the bribe, whichever is higher.

Judge Zulhazmi Abdullah set bail at RM8,000 per person, for each charge, with one surety.

The case is set for mention on May 3.
