Kini Roundup: IGP decries death in custody findings, Bank Negara fines 1MDB

Here’s a recap of major headlines yesterday you may have missed.

IGP decries sub judice over Dharmendran

Police chief Khalid Abu Bakar argued that the ongoing murder trial of four cops for the death of N Dharmendran in police custody makes it sub judice for the Enforcement Agencies Integrity Commission (EAIC) to probe complaints related to the case, which by law, it should have rejected in the first place.

In its findings released yesterday, the EAIC wanted the Attorney-General’s Chambers to consider filing criminal charges against police personnel who were found to have fabricated entries in the lock-up diary which may indicate an attempt to cover up the circumstances around Dharmendran's death.

The commission also rejected the cops' explanation that Dharmendran's ears were stapled after his death as "totally illogical,” citing testimonies that affirm the injuries were inflicted while he was alive.

Bank Negara fines 1MDB, payment to mark end of probe

Bank Negara has issued a letter of administrative compound of unspecified amount to 1MDB for failing to fully comply with directions issued under the Financial Services Act 2013, after receiving the consent of attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali.

1MDB has agreed to pay the fine which will end the central bank's query into the fund's improprieties.

While across the Causeway, a former banker with the Singapore arm of Switzerland’s BSI Bank, who was charged with money laundering after the island state’s investigation into 1MDB, has been slapped with two new charges.

Adenan top among bumi voters

Support for Sarawak BN chief Adenan Satem, especially among the bumiputera, appears unshakeable. Despite local issues plaguing some parts of the state, Adenan's popularity continues to cement BN's hold in bumiputera-majority constituencies.

The opposition appears to be getting lacklustre support at ceramah in the urban constituencies as the campaign enters its fourth of the 12-day election campaign.

Electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 has claimed multiple election rules violations by both sides in the lead-up to the Sarawak state election, one of which being the distribution of organic fertilisers on the day before nomination day in bags bearing the logo of ruling coalition BN.

Malaysian press not so free

Malaysia retained its ‘not free’ status and remained at the bottom third of the world’s rankings prepared by international watchdog Freedom House in its 2016 report on press freedom.

A journalist from news website The Heat Malaysia has been hauled in by police for questioning under the Sedition Act in connection to an article on Citizens' Declaration which she wrote for the site.

More Kini bites

Former Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Said refused further comment on speculations that his successor Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman's days in office are numbered, claiming that it is a sensitive issue between the state ruler and the embattled MB.

The much-awaited debate between Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin on the state of the national football turned instead into a cordial chat between the duo.

In answer to netizens’ negative comments on the new Kuala Lumpur logo and tagline, Mayor Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said that the design can still be fine-tuned and City Hall is open to public suggestions.

Looking ahead

The Federal Court will decide if the inspector-general of police has to obey the order by the High Court to reunite mother M Indira Gandhi with her daughter after her ex-husband, who converted to Islam, took the child – who was then 11 months old.

The teacher has been embroiled in a bitter custodial battle with her former husband over their three children in the past eight years.
