Gerakan condemns ‘death threats’ against its leaders

Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong today slammed the death threats reportedly made against party leaders for questioning Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's ongoing bungalow issue and the Taman Manggis land deal.

He said in a statement that party secretary-general Liang Teck Meng and Penang Gerakan vice-chairperson Oh Tong Keong were unfairly targeted for their roles in raising questions against the Penang chief minister and the state government.

"The political intimidation was tantamount to criminal offence under the Penal Code and (we) call on the authorities to conduct comprehensive investigation and bring the responsible parties to book.

"Both Liang and Oh have the full support of the party. It is our duty and freedom, both as politicians and concerned citizens, to ask valid questions and demand clarity from alleged parties to shed light on the issue," he said, adding that Gerakan strongly condemned the threats.

He said the dangerous action must be stopped with strong law enforcement and deterrent penalties before it develops into a new political culture beset with violence, unlawfulness, and fear.

Media reports said the death threats arrived in the mailbox of the Penang Gerakan headquarters in recycled pink envelopes and dated April 11, containing several 'hell money' or joss paper resembling bank notes and with printed English messages telling the two party leaders to “go to hell”.

The note accused the two leaders of betraying Chinese Malaysians and attached with it was a Chinese newspaper clipping on Liang asking questions at a press conference about Lim's purchase of the bungalow.

The purchase of the bungalow at Jalan Pinhorn, George Town, by Lim for RM2.8 million became a controversy after Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahaya raised the issue in the Dewan Rakyat and claimed that the price was below the market value.

Meanwhile, the land at Taman Manggis, which was previously allocated for the construction of a hardcore poor housing project, had been sold to a developer and there are plans for the construction of a private hospital and hotel at the site.
