Umno minister: PKR 'crying wolf' over 'money, women' claims

An Umno minister has described allegations that "money and women" are being requested during negotiations with the Selangor state government as yet another example of PKR "crying wolf".

This is unless there is evidence that could eventually result in certain leaders getting arrested and sent to jail, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak.

"If not then this is just one more false allegation in almost 20 years that PKR makes against its political enemies as well as against its own leaders that it wants to oust.

"It has come to a stage that if PKR or any of its leaders make an allegation of corruption against anyone, we can more or less safely brush aside that allegation as one more in so many incidences of crying wolf by people who have nothing better to do," Salleh claimed in a blog post.

Commenting further, Salleh cited a Malaysiakini report on Aug 18, 2008 that quoted former PKR Youth chief Ezam Mohd Noor (who later rejoined Umno) challenging jailed former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to make public six boxes of documents the latter claims to possess, containing evidence of corrupt practices by high-ranking government officials.

Among others, the boxes were supposed to contain "evidence" against former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin and others.

"For ten years until 2008, however, not a single piece of paper was ever produced, let alone six boxes or even just one box.

"Five years later, PKR, again, brought out allegations of corruption.

“But this time the allegations were against their own people, Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, and the person making those allegations was the (then) party secretary-general, Saifuddin Nasution," Salleh pointed out.

In this case, Salleh recalled that Saifuddin had showed the public one thick file that was supposed to contain the evidence against Khalid.

"Because of these allegations, Khalid was forced to resign from his post of menteri besar.

"Khalid then sued Saifuddin, who withdrew the allegation and apologised to Khalid - instead of showing the court the evidence of Khalid’s corrupt acts, which Saifuddin said he had in his possession," he said.

Since then, Salleh noted that it has been less than two years and new allegations of corruption are being made by PKR’s new secretary-general, Rafizi Ramli, against the Selangor government and its state leaders.

"This time, however, no one has been asked to resign like Khalid was because no names were mentioned in those allegations," he said.

Claims not baseless

In an immediate response, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar refuted Salleh claim that all the party's statements and criticisms on corruption were baseless.

Instead, she asked the first-term minister to go read up the Parliament's Hansard and study PKR history, to get to know the party better before passing judgement.

She cited issues and concerns raised by PKR leaders as far back as 2010 regarding 1MDB, which was also scrutinised by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and is the subject of several open investigations in foreign jurisdictions.

"Of all the efforts, if I could use one key example, would be (PKR defacto leader) Anwar Ibrahim, who had leveled criticism against Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA), later to be known as 1MDB, which has been proven right today," she said.

"I hope the minister would like read up on our history and the parliamentary Hansard, because he just got into cabinet before judging us accordingly," she said when met in the Parliament lobby.

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail on Tuesday said the party's political bureau has decided that Rafizi must directly hand over all evidence in his possession to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The allegations first surfaced through Rafizi’s WhatsApp message in the 'Solidarity for Anwar' group that was later leaked to the media.

Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, in response, dismissed the allegations as being part of a systematic smear campaign against the state government.
