Well-known poet Wan Omar Wan Ahmad, fondly known as Sutung Umar RS, died at his home in Taman Sri Gombak in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He was 68.

Wan Omar succumbed to kidney complications and diabetes at about 5pm after a long battle, said his daughter, Murni Wan Omar.

“He had been receiving haemodialysis treatment over the past three years at a private hospital in Ampang,” the 38-year-old told Bernama.

Wan Omar was laid to rest at the Bukit Permata Muslim Cemetery in Taman Seri Gombak in Kuala Lumpur at about 8pm.

Having graduated in Bachelor of Arts majoring in Creative and Descriptive Writing from Universiti Malaya, he served as Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka group magazine editor before joining Berita Harian.

Among his popular works were ‘Makyung’, ‘Wau Bulan’, ‘Taburkan Bunga’, ‘Kampung Halaman’ and ‘Api Cinta’.
