Spotlight on Rosmah's private jet ride, opposition courts controversies in by-elections

Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

Rosmah's private jet ride under spotlight

Prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor suddenly found herself a topic of the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections as PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli highlighted her use of a government private jet.

Rosmah's aide Rizal Mansor defended his boss over the use of the jet to accept an award on behalf of Permata in Istanbul, explaining that she was on a tight schedule.

Rizal also blasted Rafizi, stating that Rosmah had contributed much to thousands of children when she inspired Permata, an early childhood programme.

Meanwhile, the prime minister's aide Tengku Shariffuddin Tengku Ahmad again accused The Wall Street Journal of lying.

This was after Singapore authorities denied any banks in the city-state received 1MDB bond proceeds as claimed by the international financial newspaper.

Parties court controversies in twin by-elections

Several opposition parties courted controversy in the twin by-elections with PAS earning flak for questioning why Taoists can burn 'hell notes" which is seen as polluting the environment but Muslims cannot have hudud.

MCA rebutted this, stating that such burning is done within private space but hudud seeks to introduce a criminal justice system that will have a wide-ranging impact on all Malaysians.

Parti Amanah Negara's Nizar Jamaluddin also courted controversy after claiming the Kuala Kangsar by-election was a divine retribution for BN's coup in Perak in 2009, but stood by his remark.

Nizar's colleagues in Amanah as well as DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang expressed disapproval over the comment while the son of the late Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad said the claim was hurtful to his family.

DAP was also in the news after putting up several billboards, including one of Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos calling the Chinese pigs, and they were subsequently removed after complaints were made to the Election Commission.

Debate over jailing of teen for insulting crown prince

There was a chorus of criticism against the one-year jailing of teenager Muhammad Amirul Azwan Mohd Shakri over his comments against Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Ibrahim on matters related to football.

Tunku Ismail was also urged to get the state palace to grant a pardon to the 19-year-old.

Former minister Zaid Ibrahim likewise called on the crown prince to intervene in the matter.

Other Kini bites

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is set to make his first appearance in the by-elections this weekend at a colloquium on 1MDB organised by DAP.

MCA president Liow Tiong Lai said he had met Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on the hudud row and received a "positive response", but did not elaborate.

An East Malaysian petition is calling for the Federal Constitution to be renegotiated after Putrajaya supported PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's tabling of the hudud motion.

The four Sarawakians hostages captured by Abu Sayyaf have been released.

Looking ahead

The Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections enter the fifth day of campaigning.

Prime Minister's wife Rosmah Mansor will be distributing Hari Raya food packages to members of the security forces in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

The briefing on the Hudud Bill for BN component parties today has been cancelled due to the need to focus on the twin by-elections.
