Pagoh MP Muhyiddin Yassin today received support from opposition members, who showed up in solidarity at Muhyiddin's first press conference since he was sacked from Umno last Friday.

Among them was PAS' Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar, who told Malaysiakini he had travelled from Kedah to Kuala Lumpur to show support for Muhyiddin.

"I came to show my support because his sacking is unacceptable.

"This (the sacking) shows that Najib is untouchable," said Mahfuz, referring to prime minister and Umno president Najib Abdul Razak.

Also present were Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) leaders from Johor, including its state chief Aminolhuda Hassan, and Amanah organising secretary Suhaizan Kaiat.

When contacted, Aminolhuda said he felt compelled to show support because the former deputy prime minister had defended his principles in criticising Najib.

Asked whether Amanah would offer Muhyiddin to join the party, Aminolhuda said no offer was made as Muhyiddin has ample political experience to decide on his own move.

"In terms of politics, he (Muhyiddin) is more senior than me, more experienced than even Amanah.

"But Amanah is open to anybody and we will welcome him if he decides to join us," he said.

Others present during the press conference held at Universiti Malaya's Alumni Association clubhouse include leaders from Gabungan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia.

Also at the press conference was former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir, who was similarly sacked from the party last Friday.

Umno also suspended party vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Muhyiddin and Shafie lost their cabinet posts after criticising 1MDB, in a reshuffle in July.

Another reshuffle is believed to be on the cards tomorrow.
