Abdul Rahman Dahlan said he will run programmes at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) that will make Malaysians more interested in the economy.

He said the EPU plays an important role in policy-making and this process should not only be in the hands of economists. Instead, the people should have a say, he said.

Abdul Rahman was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of the unit in the cabinet reshuffle today, leaving the urban well-being, housing and local government minister post he held for three years.

"I believe economic issues will play a crucial role in determining the votes in the upcoming 14th general election.

"It is therefore time to get Malaysians to be even more interested in the nation's economic issues by using a language that is friendly to all and sundry.

"I look forward to embark on programmes that will bring the EPU closer to the rakyat - programmes that make the EPU more understood and appreciated by the ordinary people," he said in a statement today.

The BN strategic communications chief also thanked Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for his "wisdom" in appointing him to the post.

The position was previously helmed by former Maybank CEO Abdul Wahid Omar, who returned to the corporate world after his senatorship expired last month.

Wahid had succeeded former central banker Mohamed Nor Yaakop, who held the position from 2009 to 2013. Mohamed Nor concurrently served as Finance Minister II.

Abdul Rahman, who is Sabah BN secretary, was first appointed to cabinet in 2013, after BN won all but three of the 25 Sabah parliamentary constituencies in the 13th general election.
