An interfaith breaking fast event organised by a church in Petaling Jaya went on tonight despite an earlier cancellation following a police report.

Activist Syed Azmi Alhabshee had earlier posted on Facebook that the dinner, held at the Church of the Assumption, was cancelled after police warned that an individual or group might cause trouble.

"Someone made a police report and two police went to the church nicely and explained that tonight there might be an individual or group who would cause trouble.

"Having weighed all the options, the church decided to cancel the event. All in good faith," Syed Azmi wrote this evening.

However hours later, other Facebook users began posting that the dinner still continued, albeit with a smaller crowd.

"Despite the hatred and police report, we want to show that true loving Malaysians still exist," Rayyan Haries posted.

One of the attendees, Joycelyn Lee, said 15 people attended the breaking fast dinner at the church.

"But a lot of people showed their support by turning up and collecting the food the organisers had ordered.

"The total ordered was 65 packs of food but support was so good they ordered more," Lee told Malaysiakini.

Previously, when promoting the dinner on Facebook, interested participants were informed that the church would be serving halal food, as well as make accomodations for Muslims to pray, including buying prayer mats for the faithful.
