Muhyiddin weighs in on DOJ filings; MH370 search suspended

Here are the key headlines from yesterday that you may have missed, in brief.

Muhyiddin weighs in on DOJ filing

The identity of ‘Malaysian Official 1' should be obvious to all, based on information from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) civil suit to recover assets allegedly bought with “stolen money” from 1MDB, said former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Pagoh MP also criticised Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over his reaction to the civil suit. He questioned the PM's logic and asked if Najib considered defending those accused of stealing from the nation’s coffers was more important than the people's interest.

Meanwhile former DAP leader Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim said he could not understand why there was no communication between DOJ and 1MDB, and described the probe as a “modern-day wonder”.

Sibling row

Riza Aziz is reaping what he sowed for selling his soul to the devil, said his estranged sister.

This is after Najib's stepson was named in the DOJ filings for allegedly using monies stolen from 1MDB to buy million-dollar properties in the US and even funded a number of Hollywood movies.

In what may be a veiled criticism against his older brother Najib, CIMB chairperson Nazir Razak noted how The Edge was suspended for publishing details of 1MDB's alleged money flow, which were confirmed by the DOJ lawsuit.

Meanwhile, Penang-born tycoon Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, had purchased assets with funds allegedly siphoned from 1MDB using bank accounts owned by his father Larry Low and brother Low Teck Szen, according to the DOJ filings.

MH370 search suspended

The search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will soon be suspended if the plane is not found in the current search area, Malaysia, China and Australia said in a joint statement today.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Jailani Johari gave his assurance that Malaysia and the countries involved in the search for flight MH370 will continue to find the best method to search the remaining 10,000 square kilometre area in the southern Indian Ocean.

The decision by the Ministerial Tripartite Meeting to suspend the search has left the families of passengers and crew disappointed as they seek closure to the tragedy.

More Kini bites

Malaysians who support Najib have created the hashtag #bestrongPM on social media in an apparent bid to counter the scorn netizens have been heaping on the premier since yesterday. However, the hashtag was later hijacked by detractors.

Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has hit out at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for its interest in probing alleged corruption in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), saying that the anti-graft body has other more pressing cases it should work on.

Malaysiakini talked to legendary dancer Ramli Ibrahim, who said he was very proud of his dancers from his Sutra Dance Theatre. They have performed all over the world and put on the best rendition of the Odissi dance performance ever.

Looking ahead

This afternoon, a group calling itself Himpunan Merah will hold a press conference on their planned counter-rally to protest the anti-Najib rally proposed by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in light of the DOJ civil lawsuit.
