The government has been reminded of the Conference of Rulers' call for a speedy probe into the 1MDB scandal and for wrongdoers to be swiftly punished.

Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim) president Mohamad Raimi Ab Rahim in a statement today said the latest US court action to recover funds allegedly embezzled from 1MDB into the country is a timely reminder of the royal decree.

"(The US revelataion) is yet another black episode that has drawn world attention upon Malaysia," he said.

Mohamad Raimi said in light of this development, the government should abide by and refer to the rulers council's statement issued last October.

The statement issued by the keeper of the rulers' seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad had read, "The findings of this investigation must be reported in full and transparently, so the people can be convinced of the government's sincerity that it will never hide the facts and the truth.

"Failure to give an explanation and satisfactory answers may cause a confidence crisis."

On Wednesday, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) launched what it touts to be its largest action ever brought under its Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative (Kari).

Through a series of civil forfeiture suits, it seeks to seize over US$1 billion worth of assets that were supposedly the result of criminal proceeds from the embezzlement of over US$3.5 billion from 1MDB.

Time to un-OSA audit

Mohamad Raimi said following this, the government should declassify the auditor-general's report on 1MDB from the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

"Abim urges details of the auditor-general's report to be disclosed to the people, who are the victims of the 1MDB scandal," he said.

The DOJ suit and the public accounts committee (PAC) report, he said, warrants that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) reopen its investigation files and bring those responsible to court without "political interference".

"Speaking on behalf of all Malaysians, Abim expresses regret towards the lethargic and indifferent attitude that has been seen throughout the entire length of the investigations, and (urges) the prosecution of all individuals responsible for this scandal that has tarnished the image of the country in the eyes of the world."
