PKR Youth backs Bersih 5 rally to urge Najib's resignation

PKR Youth has voiced their support for the mooted Bersih 5 rally to urge for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's resignation.

This comes after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) forfeiture lawsuit earlier this week, where they are seeking the return of assets allegedly stolen from 1MDB funds.

"We think we need the Bersih 5 rally to save the country from being ruined further.

"Bersih 5 is the best medium for the Malaysian people right now, (that is to) gather peacefully, as is enshrined in the constitution, to claim back our rights as citizens," said PKR Youth deputy chief Afif Bahardin in a statement today.

The rally is needed because the 1MDB scandal has clearly put the sovereignty and the economy of the country in dire straits, he said, adding that the prime minister's silence on these issues is a further betrayal to the people.

Najib had also successfully centralised the power within the executive, and has undermined the judicial process as well as got rid of his political enemies to cover up the 1MDB scandal, Afif said.

He also said that PKR Youth is willing to offer their help in mobilising as many youths and Malaysian citizens as possible, regardless of ethnicity, religion or political views, to come out for the rally.

Yesterday, electoral watchdog Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah had said that a Bersih 5 rally was on the cards, though they are currently in the process of discussion.

This comes after the DOJ said that US$731 million was allegedly siphoned from 1MDB into a bank account owned by the unnamed 'Malaysian Official 1'.

The department's description of Malaysian Official 1 in its court documents has sparked speculation that it refers to Najib.
