Amanah warns PAS not to break up Pakatan Harapan

Penang Parti Amanah Negara chairperson Mujahid Yusof Rawa said the party will fight any effort, including PAS', to break up Pakatan Harapan.

Mujahid was speaking in the context of an impending snap polls in Penang proposed by the DAP to seek a fresh mandate after Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was slapped with two graft charges.

Mujahid said that PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man's recent remark in a Chinese daily showed he tried to "interfere" in the business of Harapan.

"He did that by warning and threatening Amanah, which we regret. He has no basis and right to do so," Mujahid said in a statement.

"I advise the deputy president of PAS that it is better for him to focus on identifying the real enemy and don't act as the instigator between Amanah and its allies in Harapan," said Mujahid.

"If PAS has identified its true political enemy, the party would surely be with Harapan and would not waste time breaking up Harapan by attacking Amanah," said the party's vice-president.

On July 26, Tuan Ibrahim reportedly told a Chinese daily that PAS will have a "conditional cooperation" with PKR in the event of a snap election in Penang.

Tuan Ibrahim reportedly told Sin Chew Daily that the party plans to contest at least six seats.

The daily reported that other than the six seats, PAS plans to contest in two or three seats which the party loaned to PKR.

"If PAN (Amanah) contest in PAS seats, we will contest in DAP and PKR seats," Tuan Ibrahim was quoted as saying.

He was also quoted as saying that PAS will not "interfere" and create three-cornered fights if Amanah does not do the same.

"As PAN is a member of Pakatan Harapan, we see PKR as representing all three Pakatan parties in the negotiations.

"But they must not allow PAN to contest; if they do, it goes against our conditions," Tuan Ibrahim reportedly said.

Mujahid reminded PAS that the party is a component of Harapan and will remain so despite the various challenges.

Since Harapan was formed, PAS does not have a role in building or developing the alliance although the party was invited to do so, said Mujahid.

PAS decided to form the third block, and not join Harapan, Mujahid reminded his former colleague.

"Harapan has gone through many challenges before it is even one year old," he said.

"But we remain committed to combining the forces of the opposition to face BN after PAS decided to break up with DAP," he added.
