Umno wants snap polls in Kelantan

Umno wants the PAS-led Kelantan government to call for a snap election, citing a leadership crisis in the state.

Kelantan Umno deputy chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub said infighting among Kelantan PAS leaders had eroded public confidence in the Islamist party.

"The Kelantan state government's teamwork to govern the state is clearly in shambles, so it's better if a state election is called early because a responsible party should restore the public's confidence.

"The state government may deny it, but there is word that several assemblypersons have lost confidence in the Kelantan government's leadership and will exit PAS," Ahmad Jazlan was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.

The Malay daily also reported Ahmad Jazlan, who is the deputy rural and regional development minister, as saying the situation in Kelantan is worse than in Penang.

"The people had given their trust following the good cooperation among the PAS leadership, but now they are divided, and are trying to topple one another," he said.

However, the extent to which the Kelantan leadership is allegedly split, and in what manner, is unclear.

Ahmad Jazlan said Umno was fully prepared in the event that the state legislative assembly is dissolved.

The call for snap polls in the PAS stronghold comes amid continued negotiations between Pakatan Harapan component parties to call for an early state election in Penang.

DAP's call for a snap election comes after Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also the party secretary-general, was slapped with two counts of corruption.

However, PKR is not yet convinced of the need for snap polls.
