Minister says only idiots clueless on MO1; gov’t urged to end film fest row

Here are the key headlines from yesterday that you may have missed, in brief.

Minister says MO1's identity is clear

Federal minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said only 'idiots' wouldn’t know who is ‘Malaysian Official 1' referred to by the Department of Justice (DOJ), but said the fact that US did not explicitly name Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak meant he wasn’t involved in the 1MDB action.

Another minister, Khairy Jamaluddin, was also upset that the DOJ made it look as if Putrajaya was guilty even though the matter had yet to go to trial.

However, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said the DOJ was merely stating facts .

The DOJ in its filing claimed more than US$3.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB and at least US$731 million of this sum went to ‘Malaysian Official 1'.

Putrajaya urged to intervene in film festival segregation

The language segregation for awards at the 28th Malaysia Film Festival continued to generate controversy, with urgings for Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak to intervene .

Md Nor Kassim, who was nominated for best cinematography at the FFM, withdrew from the contest to protest the segregation.

He is the second public figure to boycott the FFM over the issue after actor Afdlin Shauki, who earned praise from AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes and CIMB chairperson Nazir Razak.

Meanwhile, the Film Directors Association of Malaysia defended the segregation, stating that even the Academy Awards in the US had a separate category for other languages.

Other Kini bites

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak defended his record despite criticism that he was leading the country to become a failed state, stating that world leaders still recognised the country.

A video of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad using the derogatory word 'keling' went viral on social media, prompting a police report against him.

Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said his government is stable and does not expect a coup when the state assembly convenes on Monday.

Pokemon Go was officially launched in Malaysia but has been banned by the Federal Territories mufti.
