Mixed doubles shuttlers get RM60,000 reward from XOX

Mobile Virtual Network Operator, XOX Bhd (XOX), announced a reward of RM60,000 in total to Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying for delivering Malaysia's first ever mixed doubles silver medal at the Olympics, last night.

It's group managing director, Eddie Chai, also congratulated the pair for making the nation proud and standing tall at Rio de Janeiro by winning the silver.

"Malaysia looks ready for a historic medal haul at this event, and XOX will be rewarding all the athletes who receive medals in badminton as well as in other sports.

"Let’s all continue to support our Malaysian contingent as they do great things in Rio," he said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur today.

Earlier on Tuesday, XOX had offered RM100,000 reward should the pair win the nation's first ever Olympic gold medal.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying will also share the RM300,000 Olympics incentive and monthly RM3,000 pension for each of them for the silver medal feat from the government.

The world number 11 pair lost 14-21, 12-21 to the world's third-ranked Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia in the final tie last night after a 45-minute battle.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying turned giant slayers in their march to the final by defeating world number six Xu Chen/Ma Jin of China in the semifinals on Monday despite starting as the 'underdogs' in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
