1MDB intrigue in US and HK; TangkapMO1 and red shirts to collide

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

1MDB intrigue in US and Hong Kong

Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio has backed out of hosting US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's fundraising function but his aide denies it has anything to do with his links to the 1MDB scandal.

The lavish super yacht 'Equanimity', which is linked to Penang-born billionaire Jho Low, was reportedly spotted in Hong Kong waters.

Jho Low is named as a central figure by the US Department of Justice in the 1MDB scandal.

Back home, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli is mulling to lodge a police report against inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar for the apparent lack of progress in the 1MDB investigations.

Khalid said the police are prepared to take Rafizi's report but insisted that progress is being made on the 1MDB investigation.

Meanwhile, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu criticised Islamic religious leaders for not taking on the 1MDB issue and for being more interested in labelling other Muslims as "deviant".

Students versus red shirts

Organisers of the TangkapMO1 rally warned that any public disorder that may take place will be due to Mohd Ali Baharom's red shirts movement which is threatening a counter-rally.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ali, better known as Ali Tinju, launched the T-shirt for his counter-rally, bearing the words "Aku Melayu" (I am Malay).

The TangkapMO1 rally is largely spearheaded by student activists.

Agong and MO1 saga comes to an end?

Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad has finally apologised for his claim that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is "MO1".

The US Department of Justice claimed that US$3.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB and at least US$731 million of this money went to "Malaysian Official 1" or MO1.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to come clean on who is MO1 to avoid another fiasco like Nawawi's.

Meanwhile, Najib said he would rather do gardening after retirement than harass his successor, like how ex-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was now trying to dislodge him.

Other Kini bites

PKR's Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli and Semambu assemblyperson Lee Chean Chung were summoned by police for taking part in a rally outside the Sungai Buloh Prison to celebrate jailed Anwar Ibrahim's birthday.

Kuala Langat Umno division denied dishing out money for people to attend its delegates' meeting and lodged a police report on the matter.

PKR Youth has offered to debate with Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun on his claim of a conspiracy to topple the prime minister.

Rapper Namewee has been remanded for four days for his music video that allegedly insults Islam.

The remand against a "datuk", who was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission with bags of cash hidden in his house ceiling, has been extended.

Looking ahead

The Court of Appeal will decide if Bersih is liable for RM122,000 in alleged losses claimed by the government for damages in the Bersih 3 rally.

The TangkapMO1 rally organisers are set to submit a memorandum to protest the arrest of its activists who have been promoting the Aug 27 event.

Proton is set to launch its updated version of Proton Persona.
