PKR's DOJ offensive; lambasting for Ku Nan; Petronas' Sarawak saga

KINI ROUNDUP Here are some of the key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

PKR's DOJ offensive

PKR has launched a state-wide outreach campaign to explain to the rakyat in Kedah, the civil suit of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) against 1MDB to seize RM4 billion worth of assets bought in the US with funds allegedly stolen from the state investment arm.

The ongoing 'dilemma' may have contributed to the property market slump in Malaysia, which has become a 'no-go territory' for foreign investors, with the sector fuelled by domestic consumption for now, says veteran real estate agent Siva Shanker.

Meanwhile, veteran politician Lim Kit Siang wonders if there indeed was an alleged conspiracy, involving three Tan Sri in July last year, to topple Najib Abdul Razak as prime minister - or if it was instead a conspiracy to prevent the top officials from carrying out their duties under the law.

Lambasting for Ku Nan

Malay rights NGO Perkasa has expressed concern over Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor's non-committal response to measures to shore up his ministry and agencies under it, such as the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), against corruption and abuse of power.

The state assemblyperson for Balakong, Eddie Ng Tien Chi, is willing to teach Tengku Adnan, also known as Ku Nan, on how to get open tenders without losing money and to ensure that the projects run smoothly.

And, think tank Ideas chief executive Wan Saiful Wan Jan told the minister not to insult the police by implying that they cannot be trusted to ensure the safety of public officials, after Ku Nan said he does not want to declare his assets publicly to avoid being targeted by criminals.

Instead of being a target of crime, PKR's Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli said his fortunes turned for the better after he declared his assets last year, as he received donations and has not received many requests for sponsorship because the people know he does not have the funds to do so.

Petronas' Sarawak Saga

After being accused of targeting Sarawakian staff in its recent restructuring, Petronas has now been told to explain why it appointed a Kuala Lumpur-based company to handle ticketing and travel matters for Petronas staff, which had for long been handled by four Sarawak travel agencies.

The Sarawak division of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) went on to question the state government's "double standards" in freezing work permits for Peninsular Malaysians working in Petronas' operations in the state, but continued to issue such permits for thousands of foreigners.

More Kinibites

The Court of Appeal in a landmark decision yesterday affirmed that the government and police have no right to institute a claim under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for damages allegedly incurred in the 2012 Bersih 3 rally.

An artist known for his provocative creations has put up posters in Los Angeles, lampooning the charitable foundations of Leonardo DiCaprio, who is embroiled in the 1MDB saga, and US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, hinting on her political funding as a money-laundering enterprise.

The Penang police will ask Bukit Aman to request for assistance from Interpol to locate the Taiwanese singers who sang with Namewee in a video clip, which allegedly insulted Islam, to assist in their investigation.

Looking ahead

The Malaysian Olympics squad will be returning from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil today. A ceremony to greet our returning heroes is scheduled at the Komplex Bunga Raya of the KL International Airport at 2.30pm.

The Malaysian Bar will hold a forum on the proposed amendments to the Legal Profession Act and its serious threat to the Bar in Shah Alam.
