AirAsia provides free flights for life to Asean gold medalists

AirAsia will offer free flights for life to athletes from Asean who won gold medals in the 2016 Rio Olympics, which ended on Sunday.

“What an Olympics this was for Asean. AirAsia which has its roots in Asean wants to reward those who gave us so much joy,” said its chief executive officer Tony Fernandes.

“Also, they taught and reminded us never to give up on your dreams and never stop believing you can be the best in the world,” he added in a Facebook post.

Fernandes also said AirAsia would reward athletes who won silver and bronze medals.

“We want all Asean to believe they can be the best in the world. Thank you to all the medalists for making us dream and believe,” he added.

Malaysia won four silvers and one bronze in the Olympics.

National shuttlers Lee Chong Wei, Goh V Shem, Tan Wee Kiong, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying took silver in the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Another silver was won in the 10m synchronised diving by Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong.

Meanwhile, Azizulhasni Awang won bronze in he Keirin cycling event.

Below are the athletes from Asean who won the gold medal:

Vietnam:

Hoang Xuan Vinh, 41-year-old army colonel from Vietnam won the 10m air pistol competition. He later won another silver medal in another 50m air pistol event.

Singapore:

Joseph Schooling, 21, won the 100 metres butterfly event and broke the Olympics record at 50.39 seconds defeating world champion, Michael Phelps from US.

Indonesia:

Tontowi Ahmad, 29, and Lilyana Natsir, 31 defeated Malaysian mixed doubles, Chan Soon Peng and Goh Liu Ying in a straight set match, 21-14, 21-12. This is also Lilyana's second Olympics medal after winning a silver medal with Nova Widianto in Beijing Olympics 2008.

Thailand:

Thailand won their two gold medals from weightlifting events: Sopita Tanasan, 22, won the gold medal in the women's 48kg while Sukanya Srirusat, 21, competed in the women's 58kg event. Both Olympians won their gold medals for the first time in Rio Olympics 2016.
